Location: Eastern Africa based
Reports to: Senior Facilitator, East Africa
Hours per week (average): As needed basis

WomenLift Health is seeking a Consultant Copy Editor to work under the direction of the East Africa Senior Facilitator and in close collaboration with Leadership Development teammates. The Consultant Copy Editor will be responsible for reviewing and editing materials for grammar, cultural relevance, clarity, and overall flow. Materials may include WomenLift-developed: workshops, workbooks, curricula, institutional influence engagements, communications, concept notes, and more. Time commitment will be project-based, not weekly. The intensity may vary in relation to project-based deadlines, especially when associated with events.
The Consultant Copy Editor must possess strong communication skills, have a keen eye for detail and organization, write in a style that is clear, concise, and have a strong command of the English language as it is used professionally both within East Africa and internationally. They will be responsive to our team via emails and WhatsApps, available for occasional video meetings, and turn work around in a timely yet reasonable manner. They value human connection and are strongly aligned with WomenLift Health’s Mission, Vision, Culture, and Values. Not necessary but desirable to have familiarity with public health, leadership development, gender equality, and/or instructional design domains.

Specific Responsibilities Include:

  • Copyedit materials
  • Contextualize language for the East African context (Countries currently served by WomenLift East Africa hub include (Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, and Tanzania)
  • Edit materials for cultural relevance and overall flow
  • Review and revise content for accuracy and quality, including spelling, grammar, punctuation and syntax
  • Communicate and work with ID and Facilitators to ensure that content is finalized in a timely manner
  • Ensures correct tone, voice, clarity, flow and structure of content
  • Update changes made to materials across a variety of documents, ensuring consistency across PowerPoints, PDFs, Microsoft Word Documents, Excel spreadsheets, website, etc.
  • Collaboratively work with staff on iterative editing processes when needed
  • Offer suggestions to our language to use and avoid for the cultural context
  • Compile dispersed materials into one cohesive document with guidance from staff
  • Ensure accuracy and consistency across all documents
  • Other duties as requested

All copy editors should follow WomenLift’s tone and soon to be developed Style Guide and should reference our Glossary document, which includes preferred terms to use and avoid.

Scope of Work

Ad hoc, based on project needs. 
Working closely with East Africa Leadership Development and Communications team, we are looking for a consultant to work with us on an as-needed basis.
Time Frame for Guaranteed Scope of Work: Q2, 2024 for 6 months; option to renew depending on performance

  • Demonstrated success in following through and successfully completing projects in a timely manner

Preferred (not required) Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Ability:

  • Additional languages, especially French or Swahili 
  • Ability to edit text on Adobe suite, especially InDesign
  • Familiarity with and/or strong interest in public and/or global health, leadership development, and/or gender equality
  • Experience in publishing and/or editing preferred
